Austal Limited has been awarded a $4 billion contract by the Australian Department of Defence to construct eight Landing Craft Heavy (LCH) vessels.
This project, based on the Damen LST100 design, will be executed at Austal's facilities in Henderson, Western Australia, with construction commencing in 2026 and completion expected by 2038.

The LCH vessels are designed to support amphibious operations, logistics, and humanitarian missions, enhancing the Australian Defence Force's operational capabilities. Each vessel will be approximately 100 metres long, with a displacement of around 4,000 tonnes, capable of transporting over 200 soldiers and heavy equipment.

This contract signifies a substantial investment in Australia's sovereign shipbuilding capabilities, creating thousands of skilled jobs and providing long-term stability for the local defence industry supply chain.

For the marine insurance sector, the construction and deployment of these vessels may influence risk assessments and coverage considerations, given their strategic importance and operational roles.
